BACK ALLEGORY 5'4m?f Christmas allegory of shepherd and sheep (lights dim to 50%) GOD -- (enters with shepherd crook, looks around) Hmmm. Not much here but empty space. I think I'll create something. NARRATOR -- In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. GOD -- Yeah, that's it. I'll create the universe. (hold out crooks, sweeps left to right) (lights up full) There you go. The heavens and the earth. NARRATOR -- Then God created the sheep. (one-forth of sheep enter through audience, baaaa, baaaa, bent over, go up on stage) GOD -- Wait a minute. (sheep quiet, freeze) GOD -- What about the plants, the birds of the air and the fishes in the sea? NARRATOR -- This is the short version. GOD -- Oh, yes, of course. NARRATOR -- Then God created the sheep. (one-forth of sheep enter through audience, baaaa, baaaa, bent over, go up on stage) GOD -- You said that already. NARRATOR -- Well, God created lots of sheep. (one-forth of sheep enter through audience, baaaa, baaaa, bent over, go up on stage) GOD -- Yes, of course I did. Lots of sheep. (one-forth of sheep enter through audience, baaaa, baaaa, bent over, go up on stage) NARRATOR -- And the sheep filled the earth. (All sheep baaaa, baaaa) GOD -- You can say that again. NARRATOR -- And the sheep filled the earth. (All sheep baaaa, baaaa) GOD -- Enough with the sheep, already! (All sheep baaaa, baaaa) GOD -- Quiet! (all sheep quiet) NARRATIVE -- God led the sheep to green pastures. GOD -- Green pastures right over here, guys. (crosses to L) (all sheep move L, baaaa, baaaa) NARRATOR -- God led the sheep beside quiet waters. GOD -- Quiet waters right over here, guys. (all sheep move R, baaaa, baaaa) NARRATOR -- And finally God restored their soles. (all sheep baaaa, baaaa) GOD -- It's the sabbath, guys. Restore your soles. Quiet down. (all sheep baaaa, baaaa) GOD -- (crosses to C) Don't make me come in there. (all sheep quiet) GOD -- Make a note. Next time I create sheep, remind me to make them without the ba, ba. NARRATIVE -- Then God raised up some of the sheep to be shepherds over the sheep. SHEPHERD -- (among the sheep, straightens, crosses to God) Baaaa. Baaaa. GOD -- (hand shepherd's crook to Shepherd) You are now the shepherd of my sheep. You are to lead my sheep to green pastures. You are to lead my sheep to quiet waters. You are to restore their soles. Got it? SHEPHERD -- Got it. GOD -- (exits) Good. Call me if you need me. NARRATOR -- At first, the new shepherds took good care of the sheep. They led the sheep to green pastures. SHEPHERD -- Green pastures this way, guys. (crosses to L) (sheep follow, baaaa, baaaa) NARRATOR -- They led the sheep to quiet waters. SHEPHERD -- Quiet waters this way, guys. (crosses to R) (sheep follow, baaaa, baaaa) NARRATOR -- The shepherds even restored their soles. (sheep baaaa, baaaa) SHEPHERD -- It's the sabbath, guys. Take a load off. (sheep baaaa, baaaa) SHEPHERD -- Hey! Quiet down! (sheep quiet) SHEPHERD -- (crossing to C) Hey, this shepherding thing is not so bad! NARRATOR -- But as time went on, the shepherds became careless. They didn't lead the sheep to green pastures. SHEPHERD -- (optional: pulls out pocket video game, plays) Alright, if you want something to eat, there's green pastures over there (points with crook L) somewhere. (some sheep cross L, some cross U, some go into audience, all baaaa, baaaa) NARRATOR -- The didn't lead the sheep to quiet waters. SHEPHERD -- (polishing nails on own chest, crossing to C) Alright, if you must have a drink, I think there's some water over there (points with crook R) somewhere. (sheep mill about aimlessly, baaaa, baaaa) NARRATOR -- Finally, the shepherds even stopped restoring their sheep's souls. (all sheep baaaa, baaaa, mill around aimlessly, half wander up the audience aisles) SHEPHERD -- Yeah, like I really care. NARRATOR -- As a result, many of the sheep were lost. And the rest of the sheep were no good to God at all. So, God came back to earth as a sheep.... GOD -- (enters, bent over) Baaaa, baaaa. (takes shepherd's crook, stands erect) (Shepherd becomes a sheep) GOD -- I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. (all sheep gather round, baaaa, baaaa) NARRATIVE -- God led the sheep to green pastures. GOD -- Green pastures right over here, guys. (crosses to L) (all sheep move L, baaaa, baaaa) (all sheep quiet) NARRATOR -- God led the sheep beside quiet waters. GOD -- Quiet waters right over here, guys. (crosses to R) (all sheep move R, baaaa, baaaa) NARRATOR -- And finally God restored their soles. (all sheep baaaa, baaaa) GOD -- It's the sabbath, guys. Take a load off. (all sheep baaaa, baaaa) GOD -- I said quiet down! (all sheep baaaa, baaaa) GOD -- (crosses to C) Don't make me come in there. (all sheep quiet) GOD -- (to audience) I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. If I became a sheep for you, the least you can do is help each other to rely on me. (exiting, shaking his finger at audience) Don't make me come in there!
