BACK MINUTIA 4'?m2f Salvation, religion, cults, group Bible study (both characters wear business suits) AMY -- (enters carrying briefcase, crosses to DC, leans toward audience, looks left and right, looks at watch, deep breath) LIZ -- (enters carrying briefcase, crosses to DC, leans toward audience, looks left and right, looks at watch, deep breath) Was that the 91 bus that just left? (points) AMY -- Not sure. I think so. There will be another one any minute. LIZ -- You look familiar. Do you work at Consolidated? (points to exit) AMY -- Yes. I work in accounting. You? LIZ -- Yes. I work in marketing. I know where I've seen you: in the lunch room. You were leading a Bible study. AMY -- Yes. LIZ -- Your group seems to be getting bigger every week. AMY -- I wish I could take credit for that. But the Bible is such an interesting book to study, it attracts people like moths to a night light. LIZ -- I'm a Christian, you know. AMY -- Oh, really?! Are you in a Bible study? LIZ -- Well, no. But I go to church every week. AMY -- Well, you're welcome to join us. LIZ -- Ah, no thanks. I'm not much for Bible studies. AMY -- I see. LIZ -- But I AM a Christian. Long time Christian. AMY -- I see. LIZ -- Been a Christian since I was a baby. AMY -- Gee, I didn't think babies could be Christians. May I ask you a question? LIZ -- Sure. AMY -- Are you sure you're going to Heaven when you die? LIZ -- I'm pretty sure. AMY -- How does a person get into Heaven? LIZ -- Oh, wait! I know this one. By believing in Jesus. Yes, that's it. Buy believing in Jesus. AMY -- By believing in Jesus. LIZ -- John 3:16 "yadda yadda yadda... whoever believes in him shall have eternal life." AMY -- So, you're familiar with the Bible. LIZ -- That's right. And I know you get to Heaven by believing in Jesus... and by being baptized in water. AMY -- But John 3:16 doesn't mention baptism. LIZ -- No. That's somewhere else. You get to Heaven by believing in Jesus and by being baptized in water... and by taking communion every week. AMY -- But John 3:16 doesn't mention communion. LIZ -- No. That's somewhere else too. But you get to Heaven by believing in Jesus and by being baptized in water... and by taking communion every week... and by belonging to the one true church. AMY -- (opens mouth) LIZ -- I know what you're going to say. You're going to say that's not in John 3:16 either. That's somewhere else too. But I know you get to Heaven by believing in Jesus and by being baptized in water... and by taking communion every week... and by belonging to the one true church... and by confessing your sins every week. AMY -- (rolls eyes, looks left and right for the bus) LIZ -- I know what you're going to say. You're going to say that's not in John 3:16 either. That's somewhere else too. But I know you get to Heaven by believing in Jesus and by being baptized in water... and by taking communion every week... and by belonging to the one true church... and by confessing your sins every week... and by going through purgatory. AMY -- Was there anything else? LIZ -- Yes, you have to be married. You can't be saved without believing in Jesus and by being baptized in water... and by taking communion every week... and by belonging to the one true church... and by confessing your sins every week... and by going through purgatory... and by being married... and did I mention that you can't be saved unless you go door to door and tell people about the one true church? AMY -- No, I think you missed that one. Was there anything else? LIZ -- No, I think that's just about it. AMY -- So, what you're saying is that John 3:16 is completely inadequate. LIZ -- No, I wouldn't say that. AMY -- But, you just piled a half dozen requirements on top of what John 3:16 says is required for eternal life. LIZ -- Yeah, I did, didn't I? AMY -- Yes. LIZ -- But those other things are necessary. AMY -- So, when Apostle Paul says salvation is a GIFT from god... LIZ -- He said that? AMY -- Peter said it too. LIZ -- No kidding. AMY -- It's not much of a gift if you have to pile on all those requirements, is it? LIZ -- I'm sure those other things are piled on some where else in the Bible. AMY -- Maybe you could come to our Bible study at lunch time and show us. LIZ -- (exiting) I think I'll catch the 92 bus around the corner. AMY -- (exiting opposite) But the 91 bus is here. 2013 Bob Snook. Conditions for use: Do not sell any part of this script, even if you rewrite it.
